Music education continues to evolve, shaping the way educators engage with students through rhythm, movement, and global influences. This year, I had the opportunity to lead several exciting events, sharing innovative approaches with both current and future music educators.
At Kansas State University, I worked with undergraduate elementary music educators, exploring how international dance can enhance their classrooms. By incorporating traditional dances from around the world, these future teachers discovered new ways to engage students through movement and music, making lessons more dynamic and immersive.
At KCOMTEPS (Kansas Consortium of Music Teacher Education Professors and Students), I facilitated a session focused on creating meaningful conversations in the music classroom. This session provided strategies for discussing different musical traditions and helping students connect with music on a deeper level.
For the Midwest Kodály Music Educators of America, I led a session titled Global Grooves, designed for current educators. This session introduced international dances as an engaging way to explore global music traditions, providing teachers with practical resources to bring diverse musical styles into their classrooms.
Finally, I participated in selecting the CODA Grant winners, reviewing a range of inspiring projects aimed at expanding music education. The enthusiasm and creativity of the applicants highlighted the dedication of educators striving to bring fresh perspectives into their teaching.
These experiences reinforced the power of music as a unifying force, enriching classrooms with vibrant sounds and movement from around the world. As we continue to expand the horizons of music education, we ensure that students experience the joy and connection that music can bring.
